The session will delve into the details of how the design team worked with Leach Botanical Garden's stakeholders to develop programming and the final design for a major garden revitalization.
With the acquisition of an additional five acres, Leach Botanical Garden took the opportunity in 2015 to create a new overall plan that would better serve the ethnically diverse and underserved population in Southeast Portland. Leach Botanical Garden is owned by City of Portland Parks and Recreation and operated by Leach Garden Friends. These two primary stakeholders developed a strategy and found funding for an $11 million first phase of development, which included an elevated tree walk, pollinator garden, new parking and utility infrastructure, ADA access, and improved pedestrian circulation.
During the public involvement process, Land Morphology supported stakeholders including the executive committee, a design committee selected from the community, and City of Portland Parks and Recreation representatives. Additionally, Leach Garden Friends organized thirty community programs in seventeen languages.
Land Morphology created solutions to engage the local community, including a successful youth program to remove exotic invasives and replant with a broad range of native plants.
Visitation is up by 45% since the opening of the first phase and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
